Eureka Timberline 4- Your last four person tent!

I got this tent when I was 17 years old. I am now 33. It has served me faithfully 17 years in 10 different states, including northern Maine. It's sturdy, and setting it up is easy as pie after the first one. I put a little TLC into this tent every year by putting some seam sealer on it but that's it. I am a big guy, (6 foot 1) and I treat this tent more like a really big two person tent. My two kids and I sleep in this tent with no problem! It fits a queen size airmattress no problem. Eureka is the king of customer service, and many accessories are available. While this tent may seem "plain jane" compared to other tents now available, it's ease to take care of and quick set up make this a great first tent for new comers or a perfect tent for those getting back into the sport of tent camping.-Todd Wardwell

Not as well made as it used to be

First, I'd like to caution anyone looking at reviews for this tent that are based on one they bought years (or decades) ago. Like other reviewers, I first purchased one of these tents around 1980. I would have given my 1980 model five stars, but I can only give the newer model three.As far as the tent's design - it is called a backpacking tent but is a bit on the heavy side unless you fill it with four people. This can work if they are not too big and they leave their gear outside. The optional vestibule is nice, but is more useful for storing muddy boots than gear due to its small size. The design is classic and it still works. But we have had trouble with these tents.Our Boy Scout Troop has purchased 8 of these over the years - four initially, plus two a year later, plus two more two years after that. The tent is more or less unchanged over my older model, except for two items. One is that the plastic tent pole attachment piece is considerably stronger than my older tent, a big improvement as some people had trouble with this part breaking in cold weather.The second change is in the shock cord material. My much older tent had thinner shock cords on the fly and tent peaks, while these newer models have heavier shock cord. This has not been a change for the better - I have had to replace ALL (10 per tent) of these shock cords because the rubber breaks inside the cloth material. Sometimes it breaks in many places, leading me to believe that the rubber material is breaking down, not simply snapping. At first, I thought that the Scouts were mistreating the tents - so I retrained them on how to care for the tents and have kept an eye on them as they are set up and taken down. But since then, the Scoutmaster has had it happen to his personal Timberline which no one other than himself has used. This is some sort of material defect since these tents were made in several different lots over the past 5 or so years. Therefore, I cannot rate this tent as high as I would have based on my 30 year old Timberline.By the way, if this happens to you, you can order the shock cord, special pliers, and metal fasteners online from marine suppliers because they are used to make custom shock cords for boat covers.-Bryan Freeman

An old friend

Like others here, I purchased my Timberline in 1976 when I was new to scouting and I'm still using it. I needed to replace the rainfly about 5 years ago after years of UV exposure and since Eureka still makes parts for this long-running model, it was easy to order. New tents have a factory-sealed rainfly and floor but you'll need to treat the other exposed seams in the bottom corners and under the windows. This is standard tent care & maintenance and well worth the short time it takes to seal. Once I've done it...this tent is ready for another year of use. Hands down...one of the finest tent designs there is! I backpack year-round with my original 2-person and car or canoe camp with my newer 4-person version. Happy Trails to All!

Save your money!!!

Very cheaply made!! Set this up today and it will be going back tomorrow. The seams are splitting in several areas, and we actually poked a hole right through a seam just setting it up! The material is so thin and flimsy, we'd be better off in a tent made from sandwich bags. A good, stiff wind and this sucker is a kite for sure! The strangest window set-up I've ever seen: you have to exit the tent to zip the windows closed!! The poles are numbered for assembly and many of the numbers were already missing, which made set-up a treat! Glad we did a test run and set this up before our upcoming trip. Off to Cabela's tomorrow.....

Poor quality

I wish the first review was up before I bought our tent. While it's great for size, it seems very flimsy. We also got a hole in a corner seam setting it up for a trial run in the backyard. You'd think the corners would be especially reinforced because the tent stakes are connected there and get more tension. Not so. This tent is also hard to set up even with two people because the poles are not joined by elastic like some tents and disconnect when you stand them up and try to stake the guy lines. Not to mention the instructions were less than helpful. (Listed parts this tent doesn't even come with!) I would love to return it, but with the return shipping fee (which the company won't pay) and restocking fee I would only have ended up with about $90 back on my purchase. It's more worth it to keep as a play tent for my nephew, learn from my mistakes and buy a real tent from a name brand that takes returns if something is wrong. Very disappointing.

great tent for the bucks

being by myself i sent this up in no time being 62 i thought it might be a problem . i find if you stake te four corners first thenput up one side lean it in then stake a guide line it stand up do the same for the other corner . then set the middle poles up and raise them up to put some tension on itand raise it up till its taunt the only problem i had was one of the tubes bent so i replaced it with a tent pole you can buy from dicks sporting store for about 9 bucks

Super Quality for a Super Price!! Awesome Tent!

I recently bought a Greatland Piece of GARBAGE tent from Target and got rained on inside the tent AND two of the poles broke. When a tent truly "leaks" it leaks through the fly, from the top of the tent, and drips on you and your stuff. Needless to say I returned it and got my money back.So I decided to buy a Eureka! 1610 because of the reputation.This tent is VERY easy to set up! There's only 4 poles!! Pretty much idiot proof! Directions are very clear. I set it up myself out of the box in less than 20 minutes! The clips are very easy to use! You have to get the poles right though because they're different sizes (main poles are beefier) but the directions are very clear on this. Bottom line, set up with 2 people should take 10 minutes tops!You could tell the difference in quality from the less expensive Coleman and Greatland brands (although, I've had great luck with Coleman!) and the Eureka. The fly and tent are waterPROOF, not water RESISTANT (there's a difference!) like cheaper tents. This doesn't mean you don't have to seal the seams though!! It says right in the directions of most if not all tents to seal non factory sealed seams!! Many beginners don't realize this and end up with a little water and think there's something wrong with the tent. It's also important to use a ground cloth (tarp) underneath that's just slightly smaller than the tent!So, I set the tent up in my yard because there were nasty storms moving in so I wanted to put it to the test. Over the next day and a half it stormed and rained non stop! It rained about 7 inches during that time!! Extreme downpours! I looked at my tent and thought "there's no way it's not leaking with this wind and rain." I went out in the rain the next day(got soaked!) and looked inside. Even though I hadn't sealed the seams yet the fly was not leaking AT ALL! There was a little water by each door. And when I say a little, I mean about a half gallon total in the tent.... that's it... for 7 inches of rain in 36 hrs!! Soaked it all up with a towel. I was amazed! I'm quite confident that when I seal the seams it will be even better!!If you want a tent that stays bone dry in a storm, buy a camper! If you expect you don't have to seal the seams of your tent, think again! As for this tent, you can't beat the quality for such a low price!

Great for fair weather tenting.

We purchased this tent and returned it all in the span of 7 days. First off the fly is way too small for the size of the tent. It serves more as a hat than a rain coat. The slanted/sloped ends of the tent are not sufficiently protected by the fly. Rain hits the slope and rolls down into the zipper area. The way the flap over the zipper is designed it allows water to pool up and ever so slowly, but consistently, drip water into the tent where the two zippers meet. This may or may not be improved if the zipper flaps were redesigned and the zippers were able to zip the door closed at the top rather than the bottom corner. I'm not convinced it would be a 100% fix because no matter how you slice it, the fly is still too small. I also used the recommended sealer on all seams and all of the seams leaked at one spot or another. You really have to use the toxic stuff but for many manufacturers it voids the warranty (not sure if that is true in this case or not).We were extremely dissapointed in this tent. We have been Eureka owners for years but ultimately wound up purchasing a tent from another company. Eureka makes great tents for backpacking but I wouldn't recommend this tent unless you are expecting sun for the duration of your campout!

A really great tent at a great price!

This tent is a fabulous deal. I can't believe it comes at such a low price. I purchased this tent and used it this week. It was a breeze to set up. I've had other dome tents that were smaller but had more poles. The tetragon has 2 main poles and 2 secondary poles. Took my husband and I about 10 minutes from the time we had it out of the box. The real test, however, was when it poured rain most of the night on Sunday. We were quite concerned about leakage as we had not sealed any of the seams at home. By morning there were 2 small puddles (4-5") at the bottom of each side door zipper. I think if we seal that area, it would be leak free. The tent is rated to sleep nine, but I think that would be quite crowded. Figure about 7 adults maximum. We had five with room for all of our duffles. As stated before, a great tent at a great price.
